Definition:

Adjuster can refer to one of three types of insurance professionals whose job it is to examine losses and to determine the extent of a loss and whether a loss is covered under a policy.

  • Employee adjusters work for the insurance company and handle claims on behalf of the insurer - their job is to limit claims paid by the insurer.
  • Independent adjusters are hired by the insurance companies to handle and evaluate certain claims on an as needed basis.
  • Public adjusters are hired by the insured to make an evaluation of a loss for presentment to the insurer.
